Having the most wonderful girl, Kristin (@kristinbrooke20 @theplaceslesstraveled), to do the Beware! Cougar! Media logo. So watch out for that here soon.
This place will feel like a real site soon enough. (:
Go Radio - Lucky Street - March 1, 2011
After reading an intriguing review on this album, I had high expectations. To say the least, it didn’t disappoint. Lucky Street by Go Radio has brought back the exquisiteness of the old pop-rock genre. Many of us associate the voice of Jason Lancaster with early Mayday Parade, and to me, this album feels like a sequel to the highly acclaimed A Lesson in Romantics. Feeling pours from all of the lyrics, catchy piano bits dance in and out of tracks, guitar and drums all offer their own sets of riffs and beats, and everything that has been missing from pop-rock these days is seemingly found. Lancaster’s voice is an entirely different breed. The raspy, messiness of his tones makes each track individualistic. Paired up with genius, catchy chorus lines, the songs are sure to stay put in your mind.
On the opening track, “Lucky Street,” the line “We’re all just chasing red balloons as our sky falls to the ground/And the ocean rises up and you refuse to make a sound” gives a hint of kid-like wonderment buried underneath words of taking back guilty actions and an intro of siren sounds. “Hold On” gives us a taste of an acoustic electric mash-up that exemplifies Lancaster’s vocal talents. “Fight, Fight (Reach for the Sky)” has trumpets blaring within the chorus lines, hinting at a little bit of Latina (And couldn’t we all use a little spice to our music?). But the final bonus track on the album ‘Forever My Father’ is probably the most powerful and passionate of them all. And I’ll be saving tears in jars for this one/How can I fit all these words into such a simple verse are such strong statements. Not to mention Erin and Daniel Lancaster singing along with Jason; nothing can compare or hit as hard. Lucky Street will have fans of pop-rock happy to have something worthwhile to listen to and after three years in the making, it doesn’t dismay.Rating: 4 out of 5

Running a media site is not my thing. I am always lacking when it comes to dedication. But, I am going to work on trying my hardest to post some stuff.

Well well well! As this week’s coming to an end, interviews should be posted soon. I’ve been seriously lagging and have been ultra busy. But alas, thanks for the support!

Review - Avila
“Tribal at the beginning and tribal at the end,” This is how Aaron Wilson, guitarist of the band Avila, describes the set that they just played. The lead singer, Hayden Trobee, comes forward, “Thank you so much for coming out tonight.” He chimes in with a grin. There’s something genuine about these boys from the locals of Monument, Colorado (About an hour south of Denver). Maybe it’s the way that they present themselves with cutoff jeans and oversized sweaters. It also could be the fact that they’re a band made up of brothers; Hayden being the older brother of their newest addition, Drake Trobee, and Zach (keyboards), Seth (drums), and Aaron Wilson being the trio of siblings. Or maybe it’s the way that they are able to get on stage and pack so much energy into each and every song with what looks like absolute ease. Then they simply pack up their gear and come back inside the venue to greet each and every fan with humble high fives and shy smiles.
With the way that they played their collection of forceful songs, you would come to believe that they’re anything but humble. Earlier that night, they had walked onto stage, their faces covered in paint and only Hayden Trobee with shoes on. From this, you can tell that the set won’t be average. And sure enough, the sound of tribal music kicks in and they all begin to seemingly play the appropriate role of dancing Indians. With a swift kick of the bass drum, they’re off into the song. Guitars bellowing, synthetic piano bits, and a high range of vocal melodies, this is what Avila is all about. The crowd doesn’t disagree in the least bit. And as the band goes further into the set, pulling out well known songs, the crowd sings along during the choruses, something almost unexpected for a local hardcore band.
Avila’s beginnings started off from the Wilson brothers’ previous band, Show Me the Sky. Along with three other members, the band had its run for a good few years. In February of 2010, though, the band split saying that it was due to ‘musical differences’. Half of the band went their own way to start the hardcore Colorado Springs based band, Monuments. Meanwhile, Zach, Aaron, and Seth joined up with the eldest Trobee and began writing music, taking a slightly different direction. With this, Avila was born.
The band hasn’t stopped since their formation. They’ve been booking shows nonstop, paving their way even in the absence of their keyboardist, Zach Wilson who is currently attending college in California. (Drake Trobee has taken his place for the time being.) Playing venues and constant practice has been keeping the brothers going. What’s next for them? They’ve been practicing constantly and working on a few new tracks here and there. This is all in hopes that they’ll be signed when all the members are together once more. “Once Zach gets back, we’ll be able to do a little bit more work with recording backtracks,” Aaron tells. “We’re going to be playing a few more shows and we’re hoping that he’ll be able to play with us.” Whether or not the eldest brother will be able to play with them, Avila will still be able to put on a strong show. With a set of humble people and crowd loving songs, it’s a close bet that Avila will be around to play songs for as long as their family ties can hold.
